NOW NW Organizing Project NOW’s NW Organizing Project serves as a catalyst, instigator, resource and supporter of diverse feminist organizing and leadership in the 6 state region of the Northwest to build NOW’s membership, organizing capacity and visibility to take action to address the status of all women. From Alaska to Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming, the NW Organizing Project works in conjunction with volunteer leadership as well as the national NOW office in the “other” Washington to recruit, retain and revitalize NOW’s members, leaders, Chapters and Campus Action Networks (CANs) to address NOW’s six priority issues:
The NW Organizing Project evolved from the work of the 2004 Washington Women’s Voter Project, which targeted diverse women’s constituencies to register, educate, empower and get out the vote of underrepresented women – as well as the men who love us. The two-year old NW Organizing Project has prioritized organizing of young women, women of color, working class women, lesbian, bisexual and transgender women and women with low or no incomes to advance the status of all women. Previous and current campaigns have been for Reproductive Justice, Wal-Mart Always Discriminates, resisting privatization of Social Security, Women of Juarez, Racial Justice and Immigration Reform, Marriage Equality, and Peace is a Feminist Issue. Since 2005, NOW Chapters, CAN’s and related networks have participated in the speaking and organizing tours to address our priority issues including, but not limited to:
Equally important, NOW national leaders:
All contributed to NOW’s NW Organizing Project by bringing their expertise and enthusiasm to our region. In addition, the NW Organizing Project makes use of the media to increase NOW’s visibility and political education through a monthly public affairs TV show, Community Women’s Voices, in partnership with Seattle NOW Chapter, which is cablecast and streamed live on SCAN TV, and by showing powerful documentaries to discuss the realities of women’s lives at the Wallingford Neighbors Friday Night at the Meaningful Movies and Look at the World Through Women’s Eyes series and used by NOW Chapters throughout the NW region. Looking ahead for the 2007 New Year, the priorities of the NW Organizing Project are to support the upcoming:
We are currently planning with women’s health groups and NOW Chapters, a speaking tour with Jane Roberts, co-founder of 34 million friends of the UNFP (www.34millionfriends.org) on global feminism and reproductive justice during March 5-9th plus a continuation of bitch magazine and Motherhood Manifesto speaking tours on college campuses for CAN organizing in mid-late Spring. Staffed by Jan Strout, Project Director, based in Seattle, WA, she brings 30 years experience of organizing, education and activism to advance the status of all women here in the NW as well as nationally and internationally. Jan was the previous Director of NOW’s 2004 WA Women’s Voter Project and former director of Women’s Centers at Montana State and Princeton Universities. She co-founded programs and shelters to resist and end violence against women, feminist radio programs and film series, co-taught women’s studies and politics courses, organized for women’s health, legal rights, economic justice as well as for peace and racial justice. She currently co-chairs the US Women & Cuba Collaboration and serves on the Boards of Jane Addams Peace Association, Reclaim the Media, Wallingford Neighbors for Peace and Justice Friday Night at the Meaningful Movies, Seattle’s International Women’s Day committee, and Seattle Young People’s Project Community Advisory Committee.
